During the Reading Club we:
· Analyze and discuss relatively short non-fictional texts (articles, blogs, individual chapters or excerpts from books) on current, relevant topics
· Learn new words and broaden vocabulary
· Discuss what the texts are about (subject, theme)]
· Do close-readings of the texts, to explore how writers (and, by extension, speakers) use language, various literary devices (such as figures of speech, imagery, tone, etc), and rhetorical devices to create a unique speaking “voice” and “persuade” audiences
· Discover and explore new ideas
· Share our thoughts in lively and engaging group discussions
The goal:
· To improve reading and speaking skills (broadly speaking, communication skills)
· To broaden vocabulary
· To better understand how language creates meaning through word choice, grammar, and structure (semantics)
· To take our English to the next level – not simply expressing ideas, but consciously creating an individual speaking “style”
· Learning and growing in a fun and supportive environment
Important:
· Participants should possess at least an intermediate language level (no linguistics background is required)
· Participants should be willing to commit 30-45mins/wk of personal non-class time to pre-reading the assigned texts
· The sessions are hosted by Anna F. – a professional English teacher, translator, and Creative Writing coach from Canada
